Andean Health & Development (AHD) is a U.S.-based not for profit organization which has been working in rural Ecuador, South America since 1997 to create a sustainable model of primary health care delivery. The initial area of focus has been a poor tropical region of 70,000 centered around the village of Pedro Vicente Maldonado.
With the coordinated efforts of many individuals and other organizations, the poor of this region are begining to receive basic health care services in a system that promises to be self-sustaining financially, administratively, technically, and culturally.
Until the work of AHD, there were no working models of rural primary healthcare in Ecuador.
1. Provide quality, affordable primary healthcare services to an increasing population in rural Ecuador.
2. Organize individuals and "user groups" into a Health Promotion Organization that offers health packages at an affordable rate.
3. Establish an organized network of qualified service providers to better serve the target population, with an emphasis on maternal and child health.
4. Create a model of community-oriented health research with national and international academic institutions that coordinate with the Primary Health Care system to maximize benefits and minimize costs.
